Subject: Everyday Couture: Subversive Jewelry | 18 June 2008

My friends all know my love for Justin Giunta and his beautiful couture line, Subversive. You can find many beautiful pieces that you'd be thrilled to pass on as heirlooms. But don't be fooled, this isn't your grandmother's cameo collection. Giunta takes garage sale finds and garbage throwaways and creates luxurious layered necklaces and statement pieces that would feel equally at home on the red carpet or simply your favorite worn grey tee.
What Giunta does for the discarded is what Jesus does for your home life. Invigorates, refreshes, challenges and makes you stand in awe. Yes, I'm aware of the blasphemy of a fashion blog referring to Jesus in a post that doesn't involve sandals. Giunta first came to my attention in 2004, while reading an article in Surface magazine detailing his meteoric rise to success. His success since then has grown exponentially. Featured in Vogue, Elle, and many others, Giunta is praised as a revolutionary. His designs can cost you upwards of $500.00. Not nearly what one might expect for couture, one of kind pieces made of remodeled garbage. However, if you can't paypal your way to heaven on his beautiful website, you can attain a bit of the EVERYDAY COUTURE by heading into your local Target store, where mass-produced pieces sit in a glass box at the Jewelry counters. Inconspiciously, they beckon that tactful shopper who in the know, who dares deviate from the expected. And I'll be the first to tell you that these pieces from Target, although intended for women, look just as sexy as bracelets on Les Hommes Deviantes. Try it out for yourself, pieces start at $14.99, a price likely not to break most budgets.
